yarn information & yarn care

dyeing

All yarns are dyed using professional acid dyes, heat set and then carefully washed and rinsed until the water runs clear.

Please note that if you are allergic or sensitive to fragrance, a scented wool wash is used during the washing process.

dye lots

With all hand dyed yarns, each skein will be slightly different, it's what makes hand dyed yarns so lovely!

But you'll be pleased to know if you purchase more than one skein of a colour at the same time, they will be from the same dye lot.

washing

The recommended method is hand washing in cool water, with a suitable wool detergent if desired.

Superwash yarn can be washed in a washing machine on an appropriate wool setting, but hand washing really is best as it is far more gentle.

colour bleeding

It is quite normal for hand dyed yarns to bleed a little colour when washed.

Should any colour be released if washed as recommended, it will only be a small amount of residual dye and will not change the colour of the yarn itself.

Some colours will do this more than others such as reds, pinks and blues.

needle sizes

For working with DK / Double Knit yarn, the recommended knitting needle or crochet hook sizes are 3.5mm-5mm.

When working with 4 ply yarn, the recommended knitting needle or crochet hook sizes are 2.5mm-4mm.

swatching

As well as doing a tension swatch, it's always recommended to do a ‘swatch and wash' test if you want to combine very rich or dark colour yarns together with pale or white yarns.

Work your swatch with the dark and pale colours, then wash it to see if the colour will bleed into the pale yarn.
